Hospice Care

Hospice care helps patients nearing the end of life find peace in comfort and with dignity through Christ-like care. Our compassionate and experienced team will put your end of life needs and wishes at the forefront—supporting you and your family members and guiding you to live each day with dignity and grace.

Care teams include the patient, family members, nurses, the patient’s physician, a hospice physician, social workers, hospice aides, therapists, volunteers and clergy to provide physical and emotional support, along with pain and symptom management.

Home-Based Hospice

St. Bernards offers provides hospice care in homes, nursing facilities and assisted living facilities to Northeast Arkansas residents of Craighead, Clay, Greene, Lawrence, Poinsett and Cross counties, along with portions of Mississippi, Jackson and Randolph counties. The Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House

The Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House, 1148 E. Matthews Avenue in Jonesboro, is the first residential care facility for hospice patients in Northeast Arkansas, named in honor of the couple who dedicated their lives to service of others and tirelessly advocated for hospice care in this region.

The facility provides year-round 24/7 care, with a home-like setting when home-based hospice isn’t possible. Here, patients and families can find solace from endless tests, waiting rooms and hospital stays. We focus on living and acceptance of death as a part of life. It is uplifting for our caregiving teams, the families we serve and our patients.

The 19,000-square-foot facility has 20 private patient rooms with adjacent nurses stations. The facility also has a chapel and shared family room, dining room and kitchen areas.

“We can create a serene, home-like atmosphere where family members and friends can come and go. There can be no greater gift than investing in helping people maintain their dignity...” -Donna Lowe, Director, St. Bernards Hospice

The three types of care offered:
General Inpatient Care is for patients requiring procedures or treatments necessary for pain and symptom management that cannot be provided in another environment due to complexity or other factors. This can be in the final weeks of life when additional support is needed. General inpatient care can also be used as part of a transitional plan—stabilizing patients with a plan to return home with family and hospice support or move to a nursing home or assisted living facility.

Residential Care is an option for patients with an elderly or frail caregiver, or patients living alone with no primary caregiver. Clients choosing to live at the Hospice House pay a standard daily room and board rate for 24-hour nursing care and most amenities. Financial assistance is available for patients meeting the criteria.

Respite Care is available when a home hospice caregiver requires rest or relief. A patient may be admitted for up to five days during respite stay.

Resident Qualifications

To qualify as residents, patients must be enrolled in the services of St. Bernards Hospice. To enroll, patients must be diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, have exhausted curative treatment andreceived a prognosis of approximately six months.

Transfer from Other Hospice Programs

Patients of other hospice programs and facilities, including those outside of our immediate service area, are eligible to become patients of St. Bernards Hospice and The Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House. Admission is based on room availability and prioritized by corresponding patient need. Admission criteria are utilized to review each case individually and objectively.

Room and Board Cost

Hospice services may be eligible for coverage by Medicare, Medicaid and some private insurance providers. Patients receiving “routine home care” at the Hospice House will be charged for room and board. A sliding scale based on a client’s ability to pay is applied, when necessary.
