Understanding Specialty Medications
Specialty medications are often more complex, costly, or require careful monitoring and management. Because of these factors, your insurance company may require additional steps before approving coverage, such as:
- Prior authorization: Your provider must explain to your insurance company why the medication is necessary.
- Step therapy: You may need to try other medications first before coverage is approved.
- On-label use: The medication must be prescribed for an FDA-approved condition.
- High co-pays: Some specialty drugs come with higher patient costs. Our team will work with your insurance and assistance programs to help reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.
At St. Bernards, our goal is to make sure you receive the medication your doctor prescribes. We have access to a wide range of specialty medications and will do everything possible to fill your prescription.
If a medication is available only through a limited-distribution pharmacy or if your insurance requires a different specialty pharmacy, we’ll coordinate with that pharmacy on your behalf so your treatment isn’t delayed. Whether or not we fill your prescription, our pharmacists and coordinators will continue to advocate for you, ensuring you receive the care and support you need.
Medication Delivery
Patients enrolled in the St. Bernards Specialty Pharmacy program can choose free delivery to their home, workplace, or preferred address or pick up their prescriptions directly from St. Bernards Pharmacy.
Your Pharmacy Team
Our clinical specialty pharmacists collaborate with your physician and care team to provide expert guidance on your medications. They’re available to answer your questions and help manage your therapy.
Our specialty pharmacy coordinators handle prior authorizations, connect you with manufacturer or grant assistance programs, and arrange monthly refill reminders and deliveries so you always have your medicine when needed.
Working alongside them, our operations team ensures every prescription is filled accurately and shipped quickly, creating a seamless experience from start to finish.
