St. Bernards Hospice will host a volunteer training program on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for persons who would like to work as volunteers in the hospice program.
The training will be held at the St. Bernards Senior Life Center, 700 East Washington Ave., for persons who want to work directly with patients and their families as well as those who want to provide clerical assistance at the hospice office or at the Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House.
Some volunteers help with the welcome center at the hospice house, while those who work directly with patients may provide companionship and friendship, transportation, rest for the caregiver, do shopping and run errands, or they may provide professional services such as music therapy, reading literature, haircuts or manicures, etc. They serve in a variety of settings – in the home, in a nursing home, in the hospital or at the hospice house.
Topics to be covered will include hospice philosophy, services provided to patients and their families, the role of the volunteer and Medicare guidelines concerning volunteers.
Additional information may be secured from Donna Nelson-Lowe, director of St. Bernards Hospice, at 870-336-4200.
St. Bernards is observing its 25th year of providing hospice services to residents of this area.
