Dr. John Cook Honored as 2017 Living the Mission Physician at St. Bernards

Dr. John C. Cook has been recognized as this year’s Living the Mission Physician at St. Bernards.

A partner at St. Bernards Surgical Associates, he has called Jonesboro home most of his life. He was recognized earlier this month by his peers for “living the mission” of St. Bernards, providing Christ-like care to those in Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri.

The award is given annually, with nominations coming from staff at St. Bernards. After a selection committee narrows nominations to three, physicians on the medical staff select the recipient by secret ballot. The presentation is made at the annual medical staff meeting each December.

Cook was born in Batesville but spent most of his formative years in Jonesboro. He is a Jonesboro High School graduate who excelled both academically and athletically and was the recipient of the Lowell Manning Award as an outstanding and well-rounded student athlete his senior year.

After earning an undergraduate degree in zoology at Arkansas State, Cook worked for the pharmaceutical giant Upjohn before entering medical school. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and completed an internship and residency at Louisiana State University Hospital in Shreveport.

Cook returned to Jonesboro and joined Dr. H. Lynn Wiggins and the late Dr. Buck Rusher at Jonesboro Surgical Associates and has practiced for more than 30 years in what now is St. Bernards Surgical Associates.

He is the oldest of three sons born to Dorothy Cook of Jonesboro and the late John Hensley Cook. Though he considers Jonesboro home, he did spend time as a youngster in Minnesota where his father was a professional golfer and served as a golf pro at a club.

He and his wife, Holly, have two sons – Jonathan, who lives in Jonesboro with his wife, Kelley, and their children, Grayson, 3, and Hensley, 2; and Hogan, who lives in Springdale with his wife, Kayla.

His brothers are Richard Cook, a Little Rock CPA, and William Cook, a Jonesboro anesthesiologist with St. Bernards Anesthesia.
