Growing up, Dr. Joseph Kosinski knew he wanted to pursue a career in science. After graduating from Notre Dame with an undergraduate degree in chemistry, he worked for several years as a chemist, studying in a lab.
“I enjoyed chemistry, but the work was so dry,” he said. “I wanted to interact and work with people every day. I felt that serving as a physician was my true calling, so I went to Indiana University in pursuit of a medical degree.”
He applied and was accepted to Indiana University School of Medicine. After graduating from medical school, he completed a family practice residency at Memorial Regional Medical Center in South Bend.
Dr. Kosinski remained in Indiana for the first 18 years of his practice. He and his wife Marjorie have five children – three daughters and two sons.
In 2003, he and Marjorie traveled to Jonesboro to visit his mother-in-law, who grew up in Northeast Arkansas. They fell in love with the town during their trip and he began looking for a place in Jonesboro to continue his family practice.
“We like that Jonesboro is a growing community,” he said. “People are tight-knit, and it has a very small-town feel. I love the southern hospitality offered here. When you meet people, they are usually very warm and welcoming.”
St. Bernards was just completing a clinic on the Arkansas State University campus, which would offer family practice as well as urgent care. Dr. Kosinski joined the First Care team that year and has remained at that clinic ever since.
“After one year here in Jonesboro, this felt more like a home than Indiana,” he said. “We have been very happy here.”
Dr. Kosinski’s hobbies include horseback riding, working with horses, fishing and swimming. He and Marjorie also enjoy spending time with their five grandchildren. And they have another one on the way!
“Our children are spread across four states – Ohio, Indiana, Arizona and Arkansas – so the majority of our travel is centered around spending time with them,” he said.
When it comes to his practice, Dr. Kosinski sees it all, and that’s what he enjoys most about his work.
“I love seeing people of all ages – from pediatrics to geriatrics,” he said. “I like variety and the urgency of it. In family practice, I get to see different things every day, and I love it.”
