Pelvic Organ Prolapse
Pelvic organ prolapse repair sounds complicated, but it actually occurs when one of the pelvic structures, such as the bladder or rectum, protrudes into the vaginal wall. Common causes of this condition are pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, obesity, aging and genetics.
Treatment options for prolapse repair include pessary management or surgery. Pessaries are small round inserts that are placed inside the vagina to hold and support the prolapsed tissue. A pessary is a treatment that does not require surgery. Surgery involves returning the prolapsed organs to a more normal position and strengthens the structures around the vagina to maintain support.
