Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation is a multi-disciplinary program that specializes in education and rehabilitation of patients with coronary artery and lung diseases.
For patients that have experienced chest pain (Angina), suffered a heart attack, undergone a percutaneous procedure such as balloon angioplasty or stent placement, or undergone coronary artery bypass or heart valve surgery, they will be referred by their physician to the cardiac rehabilitation program.
For patients that have been diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and have restrictive lung disease, they will be referred by their physician to the pulmonary rehabilitation program.
Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation is located in the multi-disciplinary St. Bernards Health & Wellness facility. Located on the ground floor, the cardiac and pulmonary rehab team uses a state of the art telemetry monitoring system to closely monitor patients who have heart or lung disease. The clinical team composed of exercise physiologist and registered nurses are under the direction of physicians to develop a wellness program for each patient to improve patient’s fitness and to assist patients and their families to learn how to reduce risk for additional heart or lung problems.
We offer a monthly Heart Smart Nutrition class for the community and our patients.
The team works closely with the diabetes management and the medical supervised weight loss program for those patients that need those services.
After the initial cardiac rehab program is completed, we offer a supervised maintenance exercise program and also help transition patients into the St. Bernards Health & Wellness programs.
A variety of workshops, seminars and special programs are also available to meet community education needs.

What is Medical Exercise Rehab?
Think of it as a bridge between the structured environment of a rehabilitation center and resuming the activities of your daily life. Medical Exercise Rehabilitation provides a safe, effective way to aid you in recovery from injury, illness or surgery – and get you back to the fullest life possible.
In some cases, Medical Exercise Rehabilitation can also help in actively fighting disease or disability. In those cases, we can design an Individualized Exercise Prescription (IEP) to help you combat conditions such as:
- cardiovascular disease
- immunological/hematological disorders
- metabolic disease
- neurological disorders
- pulmonary disease
- weight management
- others as referred by your healthcare provider
You can get started with Medical Exercise Rehabilitation by referral from your physician or therapist. Or you can call us, and together we’ll get the referral you need.
Rock Steady Boxing
Rock Steady Boxing, a unique exercise program based on training used by boxing pros and adapted to people with Parkinson’s disease, is now available at St. Bernards Health & Wellness in Jonesboro.
Rock Steady Boxing classes will begin January 1, with pre-program assessments currently underway.
The program involves regular exercises, such as stretching, running, jump-roping, push-ups, balancing and lots of non-contact boxing, led by experienced trainers/coaches. Rock Steady Boxing serves both men and women of all ages and levels of ability.
“We are thrilled to bring this program to northeast Arkansas,” said Paul Pickens, director of St. Bernards Health & Wellness. “As a true medical wellness facility, we strive to offer programs aimed at keeping the body healthy, no matter what stage of life or diagnosis someone might face. We are excited to see the progress Parkinson’s patients will make in regards to balance, rigidity and motion.”
This will be the first Rock Steady Boxing program in this area of the state.
An open house and orientation, which is an opportunity for Parkinson’s patients and their families to learn more about the program, will be hosted on Thursday, Nov. 29. Additional orientation events will be held on the first Friday of each month. Attendees will get to hear about Rock Steady and see some of the exercises demonstrated. Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR Testing)
St. Bernards Health & Wellness is the only fitness facility in the region offering metabolic testing. Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) shows how many calories you burn at rest, doing nothing more than sitting in a chair. By testing your unique metabolic rate, we can help you understand why you have had difficulty losing weight in the past and how you can now be successful.
Your metabolic rate will be used to calculate Target Caloric Zones. With these Target Zones, all the talk about "cutting calories" and "burning fat" will finally make sense as it applies to YOU! You will learn the calories needed for YOU to stay at your current weight, as well as the amount of calories YOU need to lose or even gain weight.
The cost of a metabolic test is $60. Call 870.207.7777 to schedule your test today!
