The St. Bernards Development Foundation was established to support and enhance the mission of St. Bernards Healthcare – “to provide Christ-like healing to the community through education, treatment and health services” – through funding, volunteerism and community awareness.
The Foundation is able to accomplish its mission because hundreds of dedicated volunteers and thousands of donors believe in and live the mission of St. Bernards each and every day.
Through efforts of our volunteer organizations and under the leadership and vision of a strong Board of Directors, the Foundation is able to help St. Bernards continue to provide the highest quality community healthcare and to ensure that St. Bernards positions itself to remain the healthcare provider of choice in Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri.
Our volunteer organizations bring together a cross-section of community leaders who work closely with us to breathe life into the St. Bernards mission. Established in 1963, this organization of approximately 130 men and women provides volunteers at nine stations throughout the medical center who answer questions for visitors and patient families and help direct visitors to patient rooms and/or service areas within the medical center. Auxilians have complete responsibility of day-to-day operation of the St. Bernards Gift Shop, including purchasing stock and staffing the shop. Each year the Auxiliary provides tens of thousands of dollars for nursing and healthcare scholarships, contributes financial resources to help with specific needs identified by medical center administrative leadership and organize and support the summer Junior Volunteer program. To date, Auxilians have contributed more than $1.5 million to the medical center that for purchasing special equipment like a VeinViewer to assist in establishing intravenous access to patients with hard-to-access veins and a Heart Start Defibrillator/Monitor for the St. Bernards Cardiac Rehab area. In addition, funds generated by the Auxiliary have been used to furnish waiting areas at the medical center and support the Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House.
This group of community leaders is dedicated to supporting the mission of St. Bernards Medical Center through fundraising, education and healthcare programs that involve the community. The Advocates sponsor a unique and very successful fundraising effort each year known as Triple Swing, with proceeds from that project designated for a specific use. Triple Swing is a fun-packed three-day extravaganza that starts with a casual dinner-dance on Saturday evening, continues through a doubles tennis tournament on Sunday and wraps up with a Monday golf tournament. Proceeds have benefitted the Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House, St. Bernards Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and St. Bernards Medical Center Admissions. The money raised pushed the Advocates over the $1.5 million mark in contributions. The Advocates also coordinate the popular Butterfly Release each fall.
This group of over 120 women was organized in 2003 to assist St. Bernards identify women’s and children’s health issues and to provide insight into how well St. Bernards meets those needs and how they can better meet them in the future. The group sponsors the very popular Kids on the Mile which is a free entertainment and health education event held at St. Bernards Auditorium which focuses on children and Stories in the Forest, a program that features well-known residents reading some of their favorite short children’s books on the first Saturday of each month at St. Bernards Fun Forest at The Mall at Turtle Creek, and they sponsor the Threads of Life Quilt Show each spring. The council also undertakes projects to further their mission of promoting enhanced awareness of women's health issues and wellness that have wide community appeal.
Hospice House volunteers offer support and assistance to the families of patients in the Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House. In addition, these dedicated volunteers answer phones, perform light clinical duties and assist the hospice house staff.
Through funds raised from memorials, honorariums, legacy giving, capital campaigns and grants, the Foundation provides opportunities for area residents to make the St. Bernards mission come alive for those in need in our community.
