This event is for St. Bernards employees, medical professionals in the area, and members of the community interested in "LEAAPing into Diabetic Health". Join us for a formal night full of fun and facts on diabetes - what it is, who it affects, and how you can promote a healthy lifestyle to prevent such a diagnosis (this will include healthy cooking demonstrations). If you are diabetic, we also want to provide ways for you to remain healthy and positive when living with a diagnosis of diabetes.
Staggering statistics on the diabetes disease:
-30.3 million Americans are living with Diabetes (9.4% of the population) and is the 7th leading cause of death
-The rates of diagnosis disproportionately affects minority communities (7.4% non-Hispanic Caucasian, 8.0% Asian Americans, 12.1% Hispanics, 12.7% non-Hispanic African Americans, 15.1% American Indian/Alaskan Natives). LEAAP hopes to help all affected through education, resources, and funds.
-There has been a 26% increase in cost over a five-year period; most current data reflects the total costs of diagnosed diabetes to be $327 billion.
Event Attire: Semi Formal / Black Tie (optional)
