I remember…
When every department was headed by a sister until the 1960s and one of the sister musicians played organ music twice a day, which was amplified throughout the hospital.
When homeless would come regularly in the evening for a free meal. They were always served a big plate full, on the entry step, or if too bad weather, just inside. The hungry visitors were fondly referred to by the Sisters as "There's a Saint Joseph at the door."
When there was the chapel and an older, frame building all connected to the medical center. Rarely, but once in a while a patient would wander into the Sisters' quarters, sometime in the late night. It was a toss up who was more scared — the patient or the sleepy Sisters!
