Recently, I was arranging transportation and out-of-town escort coverage for a participant who doesn’t speak English. As we were discussing the best way to assist the participant and utilize our resources, Emily took the initiative to call the facility directly. She learned that they could provide a translation tablet for him during his visit. Rather than just giving me the number to call, she actively sought a solution. It was a simple answer—one of those “I should have known” moments—but without her collaboration, it could have easily been overlooked. This is just one example of how Emily consistently goes above and beyond her written job description to help, and illustrates how we can all support one another, regardless of our roles. In another recent situation, a participant with dementia felt uncomfortable getting on the van with one of our drivers. The family depended on her attendance at the center to be able to work. Emily quickly got the keys for a transport vehicle and, along with a center aide, drove to the participant's home. She was able to talk with her and ensure she arrived safely at the center, allowing the family member to continue her workday without worry. Often, Emily and I are the last two employees in our office hall at the end of the day. When unexpected transportation challenges arise, instead of calling someone else to handle it or waiting for a driver who’s already on his last run, Emily takes it upon herself to resolve the situation. I’ve seen her grab keys and transport participants numerous times to save her coworkers unexpected work and ensure they get home in a timely manner. There was also a time when she provided last-minute transportation and escort for an early morning procedure, ensuring that the existing routes for the day wouldn’t be disrupted and that the workload would remain manageable for everyone else. Emily is a problem solver and an invaluable team member. I want to take this moment to thank her for all the times she has gone above and beyond to help not only me but all of our participants.
